چکیده

We have investigated the effect of spatial resolution on determining pencil-beam like velocity widths and column densities in galaxies. Three 21-cm datasets are used, the HIPASS galaxy catalogue, a subset of HIPASS galaxies with ATCA maps and a highresolution image of the LMC. Velocity widths measured from 21-cm emission in local galaxies are compared with those measured in intermediate redshift Damped Lyman-α (DLA) absorbers. We conclude that spatial resolution has a severe effect on measuring pencil-beam like velocity widths in galaxies. Spatial smoothing by a factor of 240 is shown to increase the median velocity width by a factor of two. Thus any difference between velocity widths measured from global profiles or low spatial resolution 21-cm maps at z = 0 and DLAs at z > 1 cannot unambiguously be attributed to galaxy evolution. The effect on column density measurements is less severe and the values of dNDLA/dz from local low-resolution 21-cm measurements are expected to be overestimated by only ∼10 per cent.

0 Cold gas , the HI 21 cm line and evolving galactic potentials

Neutral hydrogen traces gravitational potentials. In the nearby universe, 21cm emission-line surveys show that the bulk of the HI resides in well-formed, optically-luminous galaxies. At high redshift, 21cm line absorption against background radio quasars occurs in gas-rich systems identified with the highest HI column densities – the " damped Lyman alpha " quasar absorption-line systems. High s...

The Evolution of Neutral Gas in the Universe as Traced by Damped Lyman Alpha Systems

We discuss our recent results on the statistical properties of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) at low redshift (z < 1.65) (Rao & Turnshek 2000). Contrary to expectations, we found that the cosmological neutral gas mass density as traced by DLAs, ΩDLA, does not evolve from redshifts z ≈ 4 to z ≈ 0.5 and that extrapolation to z = 0 results in a value that is a factor of ∼ 6.5 times higher than ...

The Metallicity of High Redshift Galaxies: the Abundance of Zinc in 34 Damped Lyman

We report new observations of Zn II and Cr II absorption lines in 10 damped Lyman α systems (DLAs), mostly at redshift z abs > ∼ 2.5. By combining these results with those from our earlier survey (Pettini et al. 1994) and other recent data, we construct a sample of 34 measurements (or upper limits) of the Zn abundance relative to hydrogen [Zn/H]; the sample includes more than one third of the t...

The Proximity Effect, the Uv Background and the Statistics of the Lyman-alpha Lines at High Resolution

We present results from high resolution (R≃ 28000) spectra of six highredshift QSOs taken at the ESO NTT telescope that allow the detailed study of the Lyman-α population in the redshift interval z = 2.8− 4.1. The typical Doppler parameters found for the Lyman-α lines lie in the interval b = 20÷30 km s, corresponding to temperatures T > 24000 K, with a fraction of the order 15% in the range 10 ...

The Fine-structure Constant as a Probe of Chemical Evolution and AGB Nucleosynthesis in Damped Lyman-α Systems

UMN-TH-2302/04 TPI-MINN-04/13 astro-ph/0404257 April 2004 Evidence from a large sample of quasar absorption-line spectra in damped Lyman-α systems has suggested a possible time variation of the fine structure constant α. The most statistically significant portion of this sample involves the comparison of Mg and Fe wavelength shifts using the many-multiplet (MM) method. However, the sensitivity ...
